HISTORY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EPPING BOWLS CLUB.

The green was laid down in 1910-1911 and the club formed largely by the efforts of one Benjamin Cowlin a member of the cricket club.  The green was originally part of the cricket outfield.  The first green was of three rinks only.  This was enlarged towards the end of the 1914-18 war to its present size of 5/6 rinks.
It was at this time that the first pavilion was erected by members of the club – this pavilion had a thatched roof, which was renewed in early 1932.   During 1937 the pavilion was extended and the thatch replaced by boards and felt.
It is believed a few wives of members expressed an interest in playing about 1958 but it was not until 1978 that a ladies section was formed and in 1983 they were affiliated to Essex Women’s Bowling Association
Further extensions and improvements have taken place during recent years to bring it to its present standard. These improvements were paid for by funds raised by the members over a number of years and the work undertaken largely by club members.
The club must feel honoured by the fact that it has an unbroken record of annual fixtures since 1911.
Some of the early opponents were Harlow, Highams Park, Leyton and the West Essex Clubs.  Harlow is still on the fixture list today.
Travel to away matches today is by members cars – this wasn’t always so –
Messrs. Flack’s horse and brake were used in the early days – followed by some members cycling to games later on or traveling by bus!    Can you imagine doing that today !
2005 saw the erection of a new flagpole and flag in memory of the late Mr. Robert Cuthbert who died in April 2004.
Bob was a member of Epping Bowls Club for over 50 years and Secretary for 20 of these.
Over the years there have been peaks and troughs with regard to membership - at one time there was a long waiting list but this is not so today.
